2013 Chianti Classico `San Marcellino`
The San Marcellino is made from the best grapes harvested from the excellent San Marcellino vineyard that surrounds the church of the same name. The 2013 is 93% Sangiovese with 7% of Pugnitello in the blend.
It is released after spending two years in barriques and might be the best vintage we have ever tasted here. Bright cherry and forest fruit is intertwined with pain d’epice and ginger spice. The cascading acid is harmonious and bright, allowing the purity of fruit to shine through. The finish is long and mineral. One to enjoy over the next 10-15 years.
`Gaiole in Chianti. 93% Sangiovese, 7% Pugnitello. Lustrous deep ruby. Closed nose with hints of beef stock. Still youthful and compact on the palate but with a fine, concentrated core of sweet-sour cherry with acidic nerve. Medium-bodied but still lush fruit sensations and gorgeous mouth-filling tannins. Needs age.` 17 points, Wzlter Speller, Jancisrobinson.com
`A dazzling, explosive wine, the 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto San Marcellino is endowed with serious aromatic presence, color intensity and overall depth. Dark red and purplish-fruit, exotic, spice and leather are all boldly sketched in a vivid, stunning Chianti Classico that comes alive in the glass. The tannins are present, but they are nearly buried by the sheer richness of the fruit. What a stunningly beautiful wine this is. After a trio of warm vintages, 2013 was a welcome change. When all was said and done, the 2013 was picked later than the 2014.` 96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, August 2018
`The 2013 Chianti Classico Vigneto San Marcellino is a dazzling, exciting wine. Aromatically expressive, deep and also structured, the 2013 San Marcellino simply has it all. Readers should be in no rush, as the 2013 is a very young wine. Those who can wait will be treated to a sublime Chianti Classico loaded with the essence of Sangiovese.` 96 points, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, Feb 2019
"Deep dark red ruby colour. Wonderful bouquet. Serious structure. Dark cherry and black plum, clove and cinnamon, leather. This is utterly glorious. Needed 3/4 years to evolve some of its complexity. Do not miss this. Wow ! 97 points, Tony Wood.
`The 2013 Chianti Classico is dark, sensual and beautifully layered in the glass. Freshly cut flowers, sweet red berries, mint and cinnamon are some of the many notes that flesh out in a textured, inviting Chianti Classico endowed with notable depth and personality. In 2013, Rocca di Montegrossi`s Chianti Classico is especially dark and powerful.` 91 points, Antonio Galloni. Vinous.
