Rochioli Vineyard and Winery

Rochioli are one of the great, historic names of the Russian River Valley in Sonoma. Joe Rochioli Snr bought the 125 acre property called Fenton Acres back in 1934 and that is the site of the present day Rochioli Vineyards. During this period the crops grown included string beans, hops and prunes and it wasn’t until the 1950s that Joe Rochioli Jnr and Snr planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Cabernet Sauvignon never worked and was pulled up in the 1970s but the Rochioli Sauvignon Blanc vines remain some of the very oldest in California. Pinot Noir arrived in 1968 and with it the ambition to grow the highest quality grapes possible. Planting Pinot Noir in the first place was innovative but the use of high class French clones was groundbreaking. The grapes became very sought after and Rochioli sold them to a number of wineries, including Williams Selyem, for around twenty years. Throughout this time their success remained grounded on a hard working, farming ethic. 1987 was a crucial year however, as that is when Rochioli started bottling wine under their own name. Success couldn’t have been quicker as the 1987 Estate Pinot Noir was named the Wine Spectator “Best Pinot Noir in America”. Rochioli makes a rich style of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but the wines carry this hedonistic style with grace and elegance.
`Rochioli has earned a reputation for impeccable quality as well as grape growing. It is always a thrill to taste the wines from Tom Rochioli.` Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, December 2014
