Elvio Cogno

Valter Fissore has steadily taken this wonderful estate to a new level. Having taken over from his father-in-law Elvio Cogno, he runs this 15-hectare estate with a clear vision of what he wants to achieve. The winery is perched majestically atop the hill looking down over his beloved Ravera vineyard and one can clearly see the subtle nuances of the slopes and the soil types from this privileged position. Valter is absolutely passionate about what he does and is developing and expanding his cuverie and equipment to ensure that nothing is left to chance in his search for top quality. Such is his love of Burgundy it should come as no surprise that these wines ooze finesse and elegance and have tannins so lacey and silky that one could almost be tasting Pinot Noir. Valter has a large holding of Ravera and produces a high class version as well as two parcel-based Barolos from plots within Ravera. He uses a mix of smaller and larger barrels but the oak influence is minimal. He also makes a fantastic white from Nascetta that combines raciness and intensity with herbal and mineral notes and comes out the other side looking spectacular. The wines from here have never been better and there is little doubt that this is now very much one of the top names of Barolo. Remarkably, prices remain very fair and wines like the ‘entry level’ Barolo Cascina Nuova and the unique Pre-Phylloxera Barbera are over delivering massively.
` A visit to the cellars of Elvio Cogno is always a fascinating learning experience. They are credited with putting the little-known Novello township on the Barolo map.` Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate, June 2013

2015 Barbaresco Bordini is intensely perfumed with densely packed blueberry and blackberry fruit, and notes of petals, red licorice and sweet spice. As with his other wines, Valter’s style is understated and elegant but the power and structure of the vintage also comes through. On the palate the full body is balanced with vibrant acidity and soft deep tannins, with a long velvety finish.

This spends about a year in large Slavonian barrels (not new) and is full of rounded yet structured fruit. The pre-phylloxera version shares the same grape but there the similarities stop and it’s quite a different animal. The vines are planted high up (520 metres above sea level) in Berri, near La Morra on sandy chalky soil where there is excellent exposure. Yields are low and the wine is very concentrated but the acid is concentrated too and there is great freshness and precision running through the wine. Very limited but a genuinely exciting wines.

As the name suggests, this comes from a parcel of old vine, pre-phylloxera Barbera which takes this often over-looked variety to another level. Purpley, unctuous, bright and dynamic, this is bursting with fruit and personality.

This used to be a 50/50 blend of Barbera and Nebbiolo but from the 2012 vintage it has become a straight Nebbiolo. In both guises it provides a lot of wine for the money. Made without oak, this is a brilliantly pure example. Must be tried.
