Domaine la Roubine
The domaine was established by Eric and his wife, Sophie, in 2000, a decade after Eric had taken over the family vineyards. Prior to 2000 the grapes were sold to the local co-operative but the couple were anxious to establish their own label. Both are very much hands on and get great pleasure from working their vineyards. Their main holdings are in Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Sablet where they have five hectares of each. They are planted with Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvèdre and Counoise. The Sablet consists of 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 5% Cinsault planted on sandy soil in the district of Briguières. It is aged solely in foudres and is designed to be drunk over the first five years or so, whilst the Gigondas is maturing! The Gigondas itself is a blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre and 15% Syrah, planted just below the dentelles at some altitude (which allows for later picking). The vineyards have a north-west exposure on stony clay/limestone soil. It is aged in 50% cement tanks and 50% big barrels (demi-muids). It is neither fined nor filtered. It’s a powerful wine that has a natural structure and bite to it and needs time as it hasn’t been manipulated and tarted up with new oak. The Vacqueyras is a similar blend, facing more west and on a slightly less stony soil. The wine sees the same ageing procedure as the Gigondas yet is more rounded and accessible in youth, thanks to the soil.
