Domaine de la Guicharde
Arnaud and Isabelle Guicharde have been running this biodynamic estate since 1988. It is based in the Massif Uchaux area just to the east of Mondragon, a quieter, very beautiful part of the southern Rhône, which has a certain unspoilt wildness to it. Their 40 hectares of vines are planted with Grenache and Syrah as well as 4 different white varietals (Viognier, Marsanne, Roussane and Grenache Blanc) on a mix of sandy, chalky, gravelly soil. This area is dry, warm and windy which produces concentrated grapes with natural intensity and crunch. The wines here just seem to get better and better and with prices very stable they just get better and better value too! The Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc is made from a blend of all four varietals, whilst the Cuvée Léon is predominantly Grenache with a smattering of Syrah and the Cuvée Genest is a blend of low-yielding old vine Syrah and Grenache which is remarkably concentrated and long living.
Winemaker: Arnaud Guicharde
Hectares: 15 hectares
This is made from predominantly Grenache with some Syrah. It is fairly powerful and structured with excellent fruit intensity . Drink from 2016.
From the new Massif d`Uchaux appellation, this is made from old vines of Syrah and Grenache planted on stony, rocky soil which generates a surge of minerality that runs right through its core . Drink from 2015.
