Chanin Wine Company

Gavin Chanin is one of the most charismatic winemakers in California and certainly one of the busiest, running 2 labels and travelling all over the world promoting them both. He knows the area of Santa Barbara like the back of his hand and has fantastic contacts throughout the region that allow him access to not just the best vineyards but the best bits of the best vineyards. His love of the wines from Burgundy perhaps inspires his desire to make wines that exude freshness, precision, balance and complexity. He is not looking for instant gratification but subtlety and length and consequently he seeks out sites with stonier soils and less obvious exposure and then picks before the grapes become too rich. Lutum has a simialr philosophy but is a joint venture between Gavin and vneyard owner Bill Price. Both labels will excite lovers of Pinot and Chardonnay who like wines of character and authenticity `Gavin Chanin produced one of the most impressive collections of wines I tasted during my tour of the Central Coast.` Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate Aug 2012.

The 2013 is a delicious and serious wine, racy and focussed, with sublime balance and length. This is high-class juice in every respect, packed with bright citrus flavours, subtle stone fruit and full of mineral complexities, possibly outshining any other Californian white we`ve tried (that has even been close to this price point). The impressive phenolics give a breadth and texture that you simply don`t see from other winemakers and there`s a chalkiness and tang to the wine that is reminiscent of Grand Cru Chablis. It`s almost impossible to resist now, but will only get better and better and we wouldn`t hesitate to cellar for up to 5-8 years (or beyond!). Just gorgeous!

The hallmark of this wine is the spicy, smoky quality that underpins the dark fruit character. Concentrated and with great tension, this is delicious now due to its ripe fruit and balance but could have a long future ahead of it if it is allowed to. In 2000 16 acres of Pinot Noir were densely planted to protect the vines from the ocean winds and to provide heat from the soil. Duvarita starts at around 180 feet, rising to 370 feet and it is farmed bio-dynamically. (Drink from now)

Chanin`s 2016 Chardonnay Los Alamos Vineyard opens in the glass with a youthfully reserved nose of buttered citrus, apples, flowers and fresh nuts. On the palate, the wine is glossy, rich and quite lees influenced, with good concentration and depth and a moderately long finish. - William Kelley 91

The 2016 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard reveals a lovely nose of fresh apples, pear, buttered popcorn, and struck match. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied and silky, more giving than the Bien Nacido, with a layered mid-palate and good depth and length. A lovely Chardonnay from this historic Sta. Rita Hills vineyard site. William Kelley 93

  • The 2016 Pinot Noir (Santa Barbara County) is an addition to Gavin Chanin`s range. Sweet red cherry and floral notes are nicely pushed forward in this tasty, appellation-level Pinot. Drink it over the next few years. -- Antonio Galloni, 90 points, Vinous.
