Champagne Doyard

This is quite simply one of the very best growers’ domaines in Champagne. It is based in the Côte des Blancs in the village of Vertus, with ten hectares of Chardonnay vines spread across mainly Grand Cru vineyards including Oger, Le Mesnil, Cramant and Avize. There is also a hectare of Pinot Noir in Vertus and Ay. Incredibly there are 54 different small parcels of vines which is about as far from the industrial style production of some of the grandes marques as you can get. Perhaps the two key elements, aside from the low yields, are the fact that the wines are vinified in oak barriques and that the non-vintage blends are given extended ageing before release, generally at least five years which is much longer than the norm. In many way, these Champagnes are like fine Burgundy with bubbles, very much high class wines in their own right. `Sophisticated and elegantly harmonious, Doyard’s wines number among the finest in the Côte des Blancs, demonstrating a remarkable personality and individuality.` Peter Liem,
