2016 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
From the Grand Maupertuis part of Clos Vougeot, this has all the power and intensity one would expect from the appellation sprinkled with a touch of Thibaud magic, which adds lift and focus. The balance and transparency is expecially impressive.
`(half of the fruit was lost to frost; just three barrels made, two of them new): Bright, dark red with ruby tones. Lovely perfume of black cherry, licorice, wild herbs and mint. Rich, sappy, rather supple Clos Vougeot with dark cherry and chocolate flavors accented by herb and menthol notes. A sweet, pliant, fruit-driven Clos Vougeot with lovely generosity of texture but also a solid spine of building, broad, chewy tannins. Made from well-aerated millerandé grapes, according to Thibaud Clerget, who sold off this fruit from the climat Grand Maupertuis to Henri Boillot through the 2015 vintage.` 91-93 points, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous.
`The Clos de Vougeots is a further step up in quality. Its made from a plot in Grand Maupertui just below the wall towards Grands Echezeaux – a quite excellent location on the Clos de Vougeot vineyard. More wine this year – only one barrel in 2015 – in 2016 three barrels – giving Thibaud more opportunities to adjust the oak used for this cuvée. The bouquet offer intense layered fruit – cool but with a generous sweetness and plenty of energy. On the palate very fine depth and length – a big yet light-footed Clos de Vougeot – more transparent and detailed than the 2015, with a lovely hedonistic and energetic cool fruit.` 94-95 points, Steen Öhman, Winehog.
`Enough wood to comment on frames the spicy and distinctly earthy aromas of plum and black cherry laced with a hint of game. There is outstanding volume to the racy, intense and muscular flavors that possess both good minerality and a polished mouth feel while displaying excellent persistence on the youthfully austere, dusty and harmonious finale. Here too extended patience will be necessary.` 92-94 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound.
