2014 Barbaresco Ovello
The Ovello vineyard, which surrounds the estate is one of the greatest cru in Barbaresco. Many of the vines are 70+ years old and it consistently produces one of the best and age worthy wines in the region. This flagship wine shows the pure elegance that Nebbiolo can achieve. The 2014 could be renamed ‘Pinot Nebbiolo’ – and those who enjoy Pinot Noir will undoubtedly get a lot of pleasure from this. The nose has dominant floral notes with a bouquet that expresses a complex vertical structure. Tense and racy on the palate with enough depth of fruit to balance. The finish is long and mineral.
`Not surprisingly, the 2013 Barbaresco Ovello is the most reticent of the four Barbarescos in this tasting. Linear and a bit nervous - as wines from this site often are - the 2013 is a bundle of energy. Even so, there is more than enough depth in the fruit to balance out the wine`s structural elements. All the 2013 needs is more time in bottle. Readers will have to be patient. Even so, the 2013 is likely to always remain an especially dark, somber Ovello.` 93+ points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com
