2006 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains
A vineyard with a chalky, stony soil. This has an enormously expressive nose with great concentration and purity. The appeal of this wine lies in its balance between this great concentration and its finesse. Lovely tannins. Very controlled. Huge potential. Impressive. Drink from 2016.
`The richness of ripe black cherry and black raspberry is augmented in Gouges`s 2006 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Vaucrains by dark chocolate; smoky black tea; bitter herbs and fruit pits; and a wonderfully savory saline, chalky, and somehow ore-like suggestion of things mineral. Palate-staining and insistently fresh and invigorating for all of its richness and sweetness of fruit, this deep, dense, darkly-hued wine manages to soar in its finish. The tannins here are more evident than in wines that went before it in the present line-up, and I would advise holding this for 3-4 years before planning on relishing it over the subsequent half dozen or more. Drink from now to 2018`. 93 points. Robert Parker
`Good deep red. Very pure, reserved nose hints at raspberry, minerals and smoke. Wonderfully sweet and pure, with a distinct sappiness to its berry, mineral and saline flavors. Youthfully discreet in the middle palate, but this builds impressively on the back half, finishing with subtle flavor intensity and fine tannins that reach the sides of the mouth.` 91-93 pts, Stephen Tanzer `A ripe, pretty and again, unusually elegant set of ripe aromas that run more to the blue side of the fruit spectrum with subtle spice and warm earth nuances that can also be found on the decidedly masculine flavors that, like the Porrets, are brooding and chewy on the explosive and phenolically ripe finish. The usual power, size and weight are here but it`s a bit more elegant than usual. In a word, impressive.` 93 pts, Burghound
Yields here are always very low as Vaucrains produces bunches will very small berries. This is great for quality mind as the juice is incredibly concentrated, with both fruit and structure. As a result this is perhaps the most backward of the range but its obvious quality is evident thanks to the sheer volume and length of flavour. This will be a runner. Drink from 2019.
