2006 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les St Georges
A big, big brooding nose of great complexity. Great colour and almost perfect balance. The palate is perhaps a little misleading as the depth and power of the fruit make this a delicious wine now but don’t be fooled as this will last a lifetime. Drink from 2017.
`The Gouges 2006 Nuits-St.-Georges Les St.-Georges evinces a sweet, liqueur-like concentration of blackberry and cherry, yet manages to retain a lovely suggestion of fresh fruit as well that is unexpected given the headiness and suggestive richness to its aromas. A clean meatiness underlies the lush fruit. There is plenty of tannin here but it is so refined – and the fruit so sweetly concentrated – that one has to attend closely to notice it, and the textural impression is one of silken refinement.` 96 pts, David Schildknecht `Bright ruby-red color. Knockout nose combines wild blackberry, minerals and leather; pure, complex and an essence of this top premier cru. Pure, juicy and intense, with superb definition and lift to its dense black fruit flavors. Clearly the finest `06 in this cellar; this has grand cru class. Finishes with broad, rich, granular tannins and terrific subtle persistence. This and the Vaucrains may need a good decade of cellaring.` 92-94 pts, Stephen Tanzer
You get blown away by the Vaucrains and then you taste the Les-St-Georges. It`s not so much better as different as it combines excellent concentration with a slightly more Arian quality at this stage of its evolution. Another very fine example. Drink from 2019.
A vineyard with a chalky, stony soil. This has an enormously expressive nose with great concentration and purity. The appeal of this wine lies in its balance between this great concentration and its finesse. Lovely tannins. Very controlled. Huge potential. Impressive. Drink from 2016.
