Domaine Lucie & Auguste Lignier

This domaine has had an eventful, and not always happy history, over the last decade. After the premature and tragic death of Romain Lignier, whose brilliant winemaking had brought acclaim to the domaine, his wife Kellen Lignier faced dissent in the family over how to run the estate. During her time in Burgundy, American-born Kellen completed a winemaking course in Beaune and took on an internship at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, as well as the time she spent in the vineyard with her husband. To differentiate her wine from the wines of her father in law, Hubert Lignier, was producing from his portion of the vineyards, Kellen established Domaine Lucie & Auguste Lignier, named after her two children with Romain. The wines from 2001 and 2005 were bottled under this new name, and Kellen produced her first vintage on her own in 2006, which were exceptionally attractive wines for a burgeoning winemaker.

Sadly, Kellen Lignier and her two children went back to the States at the end of 2013 to resume their life there after she lost some of her vineyards to her father-in-law, Hubert Lignier. It may be that one day Lucie and Auguste will return to Burgundy as adults to pick up the winemaking baton, but in the meantime we still have a very few cases left of some of the wines from the estate.

This old vine cuvée is made from juice from the 1ers Crus of Les Faconnières and Les Chenevery and it is both a mighty wine and a worthy hommage. Some old vine gameyness come through but also a lithe, vibrant fruit quality coupled with depth and complexity. Layered and long. Lovely, and right in the middle of its drinking window.
