Named after the nineteenth century author, ‘Stendhal syndrome’ describes the state of ecstasy – so overwhelming it can cause dizzy spells or even heart palpitations – tourists have experienced on seeing artworks or places of exceptional beauty, notably in the Tuscan city of Florence. Many of us who’ve spent time in Italy will be able to relate, to some extent, to poor old Stendhal. Is there any country more seductive? And wine, of course, is a fundamental part of Italy’s allure.
It can therefore be hard to bring the same objectivity to Italian wine as we do wine from elsewhere, but there can be no doubt, on a purely objective level, that Italy produces a greater array of world class wines today than ever before.
