Pierre-Jean Villa: Sensational Rhône in Burgundian Style

Pierre-Jean Villa Rhone Wine

We are thrilled to offer the exceptional 2016 Release from Pierre Jean Villa.

Domaine Pierre Jean Villa is quite simply one of the most dynamic producers in the Northern Rhone at the moment, producing elegant almost Burgundian wines. Maybe no surprise as his CV includes a spell in Morey St Denis at Clos de Tart before helping to create the famous collective of Vins de Vienne with the likes of Condrieu legend, Yves Cuilleron. In 2009 he decided to venture out on his own, establishing an eponymous domaine in Chavanay, a few miles south of Condrieu on the eastern side of the river and spent all his hours working his 14ha of vines. He has recently relocated to new premises overlooking the river, where he has more space and great facilities. A quick tour of the buildings highlighted his passion and energy for his project. He is not a man who enjoys standing still. He has even invested in a new machine that produces ‘l’eau ozone’, that allows him to clean all of his equipment without the use of chemicals. His is one of only 4 domaines in the whole of France to have this progressive piece of kit!

So what about the wines themselves? Pierre-Jean described 2016 as being almost the perfect vintage for Syrah from this part of the world and tasting through his range our buyer Jason found it impossible to disagree. In his words  ‘These are sensational wines, almost Burgundian in style, and although the volumes are small we are delighted to be able to offer them alongside his delicious and classical 2017 Condrieu’.

2017 Condrieu ‘Jardin Suspendu’, Domaine Pierre Jean Villa
£195 per 6 bottle case in bond

“This is full of character and intensity with enough vibrancy to support the evident concentration and richness. The fruit is remarkably focus and high toned with very appealling succulence and sense of togetherness. A fine example of this most unique of appellations” – Jason Haynes, Stannary Buyer

2016 St Joseph ‘Preface’
£120 per 6 bottle case in bond

“The age of vines varies enormously here from 30 to 85 years old with the older vines accounting for all of the whole bunches used (30%). The wine is aged in oldish demi-muids (600 litres) of between 4 and 9 years and Pierre-Jean is looking for texture from the oak not flavour. And it works. The tannins are wonderfully silky whilst the fruit is fragrant and bright with excellent balance, elegance and definition. There is a lot of class here for the money” – Jason Haynes, Stannary Buyer

2016 St Joseph ‘St Tilde’
£165 per 6 bottle case in bond

There are just 20 centimetres of sand and then the roots hit pure granite.  The vines are 50 years and 70% of whole bunches were used. The juice was aged in a mix of non-new demi-muids and barriques (225 litres). This is a stunning example, showing a little more ‘gibier’ on the nose.  Good weight and volume with beautiful bite and crunch and excellent energy throughout, with the finish climaxing in a pique of vibrancy. Lovely transparency and perfectly balanced. St Joseph doesn’t get much better than this. All in all a flawless, seductive delight. Drink from 2022 to 2030. – Jason Haynes, Stannary Buyer

Magnums £180 per 3 magnum case in bond

2016 Cote-Rotie ‘Carmina’
£225 per 6 bottle case in bond

The vines here are relatively young but yet the wine still gives so much. 30% whole bunch. It has a beautiful texture and lovely fragrance both on the nose and in the mouth. Great purity, very long and constant and very refined. This is really mouth-watering on the finish where it counts. Long and very impressive. Just a delight. Drink 2021-2034 – Jason Haynes, Stannary Buyer

Magnums £240 per 3 magnum case in bond

2016 Cote-Rotie ‘Fongeant’
£395 per 6 bottle case in bond

This vineyard is in the Cote Brune and the vines are older. 100% whole bunch here and aged mainly in demi-muids. This is very savoury with more blue fruits. Also aromas of flowers and zinc. It is wonderfully curvaceous yet toned with drive and focus. Quite sublime and very beautiful. Drink 2023-2036 – Jason Haynes, Stannary Buyer
