  • From the south facing site, the soils here are more clay based giving structure and weight to the wines, which normally have slightly more power and richness than Ovello. This is more forward and less tightly wound than normal at this stage. Rich in red berry fruit, blackberries and black cherries, with warm spice and balsamic notes. Silky and ethereal on the palate, well balanced with a defined, linear structure. Although showing well already, this will continue to age gracefully.

    2015 Barbaresco Bordini is intensely perfumed with densely packed blueberry and blackberry fruit, and notes of petals, red licorice and sweet spice. As with his other wines, Valter’s style is understated and elegant but the power and structure of the vintage also comes through. On the palate the full body is balanced with vibrant acidity and soft deep tannins, with a long velvety finish.

  • An elegant bouquet of cherry, mint, orange peel and sweet spices. The Fausoni has understated style. Voluptuous red fruit on the attack, with mid palate depth and restrained structure.The challenge with this vineyard is taming the tannins but in 2016, they are big but velvety, sophisticated and controlled. Dark red fruit lingers for an age.

  • Deeply expressive Barbaresco with a powerful, dense nose - black cherry, violets, incense and tobacco are there in abundance. Complex but restrainted on the palate, striking a nice balance between rich fruit, spice and round, solid tannins. The Montestefano is regal, and demonstrates an incredible balance between complexity and finesse.

  • The Ovello vineyard, which surrounds the estate is one of the greatest cru in Barbaresco. Many of the vines are 70+ years old and it consistently produces one of the best and age worthy wines in the region. This flagship wine shows the pure elegance that Nebbiolo can achieve. The 2014 could be renamed ‘Pinot Nebbiolo’ – and those who enjoy Pinot Noir will undoubtedly get a lot of pleasure from this. The nose has dominant floral notes with a bouquet that expresses a complex vertical structure. Tense and racy on the palate with enough depth of fruit to balance. The finish is long and mineral.

    This spends about a year in large Slavonian barrels (not new) and is full of rounded yet structured fruit. The pre-phylloxera version shares the same grape but there the similarities stop and it’s quite a different animal. The vines are planted high up (520 metres above sea level) in Berri, near La Morra on sandy chalky soil where there is excellent exposure. Yields are low and the wine is very concentrated but the acid is concentrated too and there is great freshness and precision running through the wine. Very limited but a genuinely exciting wines.

  • Mosconi is more powerful and needs time to come together. That said, it has great energy throughout the palate with a core of acidity lifting the structure. Deeper, darker aromas of black cherry, cacao and licorice spice. The tannins are solid and powerful but well balanced by the rich fruit character the vintage brings. Impressive overall balance for such a strong full bodied, ageworthy wine.

    A refreshing, delicate Nebbiolo featuring flavous such as strawberries and dried rose petals with a nice clove, spicy hint driven by Vespolina grape. This is is approachable earlier than the Gattinara, which always needs a year or two longer in bottle, and is drinking already.

    This is 100% Timorasso sourced from a one hectare vineyard in the town of Montemarzino in the Colli Tortonesi area. Luca’s first vintage was 2014. As with Solea, it has two years cask ageing (not new wood). It is whole bunch fermented in wood with natural yeasts. No battonage to maintain freshness.

    This used to be a 50/50 blend of Barbera and Nebbiolo but from the 2012 vintage it has become a straight Nebbiolo. In both guises it provides a lot of wine for the money. Made without oak, this is a brilliantly pure example. Must be tried.
