    On the nose this shows ripe red apple fruit along with orchard blossom and citrus aromas as well as a saline wet stone minerality. The palate is much tarter than the nose suggests with fresh yellow apple flavours, grapefruit and orange juice. The wine has a precise acidity, subtle toasty flavours of vanilla and cinnamon from oak barrels and has a medium plus length. Drink from 2017.

    The 2013 Pinot Noir Hidden Block is a very pretty, lifted wine. Sweet red cherry, mint and floral notes grace the palate in an understated, surprisingly gracious Pinot from the Varner brothers. The Hidden Block is one of the more delicate, acid-driven Pinots I have tasted from Varner. This is the first block that is picked, which likely contributes to the wine`s laid-back personality and expressive aromatics. Antonio Galloni 93

    Another brilliant wine in this range, the 2016 Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard is superb. Dense, powerful and beautifully layered, the 2016 exudes richness in all of its dimensions. There is plenty of Hudson textural resonance, but the 2016 is at the same time quite polished and refined. I very much admire the sense of balance. 94 points Galloni

    This wine is fermented in 100% neutral French oak. This is made in a European style with high acidity and lots of mouth feel. The vineyard sits at 2000 feed and is close enough to the Pacific to be able to hear the ocean waves. The Pinot is particularly affected by the fog which gives the wine great tension, undercutting the blackberry and mushroom notes. (Drink from now)

  • "High elevation and limestone soils mark Mt Carmel Vineyard out. The vines are dry-farmed and the result is wonderful: ripe fruit only just peeks though on the nose, an aromatic notion of ripe yellow apple with lemon brightness, surrounded by echoes of smoky hazelnut. The palate resprises this theme, and everything is still taut and dew-fresh, it seems. This is precise, concentrated and elegant; its considerable force is brought into enviable poise.     Similar to the Mt Carmel 3 5 bottling, except with more tension and vibrancy, the 2013 Pinot Noir Mt Carmel Vineyard spent 16 months in 33% new French oak, with the balance all in neutral oak, before being bottled unfiltered in March, 2015. It offers lots of rose petal, sappy underbrush and liquid-rock characteristics to go with ample cassis and black cherry fruit. Thrillingly textured, pure and seamless, with medium-bodied richness and depth, this is a sensational Pinot Noir from the Sta. Rita Hills that stays fresh and vibrant without making any concessions to fruit or texture. It will have 10-15 years of overall longevity. " 96 points, Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate.

  • "Fleshing out beautifully since I tasted it from barrel last year, the 2013 Pinot Noir Mt Carmel Vineyard 3 5 offers lots of minerality and saltiness to go with darker-based fruits, crushed violets and cassis. Slightly reserved aromatically, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, a supple, expansive texture and a big finish. Fermented with a tiny 5% whole-cluster and aged 11 months in 48% new French oak, it`s an incredible Pinot Noir that has no problem standing beside the more expensive Mt Carmel bottling.   • The 2016 Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch is powerful and dense. Succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice, smoke, leather and game run through this mid-weight, somewhat rustic Pinot. It will be interesting to see if time softens some of the angular edges that are present today. Today, the Keefer is a wine of density and gravitas. 92 points Galloni

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied and silky, more giving than the Bien Nacido, with a layered mid-palate and good depth and length. A lovely Chardonnay from this historic Sta.
