San Marcellino is made from the fruit of the estate’s oldest Sangiovese vines, which encircle the eponymous church. Blended with 8% Pugnitello, these give an intensely concentrated wine that benefits from 24 months in barriques and tonneaux (20% new), then a further 24 months in bottle prior to release. The 2017 is already exceptionally complex, but has the tannic structure – and fabulous, bright acidity – to improve over the next decade and beyond. Truly, this is about as good as Chianti gets.
