Local fire chief and Harley-Davidson fancier, Vincent Geantet is above all a terrific winemaker, producing Gevrey, which combines raw energy with aromatic precision. Supported by son Fabien, Vincent’s prime concern is to keep his Pinot Noir fruit brilliantly fresh and the purple-stained colours and razor-sharp aromas of his finished wines testify to their complete lack of oxidation. To this end, he practises extended cold maceration and vigorous extraction, uses predominantly new oak, handles the wine minimally during élevage and bottles without filtration. Stand-out wines in the domaine’s large portfolio are the Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes from 65-year-old vines on the appellation’s northern Brochon slope, with its dark phenolics, and the premier cru Poissenot, from a high altitude site, providing the domaine’s tautest and finest scented wine. Like others in the village, Vincent extended his reach north and south beyond Gevrey, adding a velvety Marsannay and intensely perfumed Chambolle-Musigny to his line-up of Gevrey crus and, most recently, a fine village Morey-Saint-Denis and an enticing white Marsannay.
