Elvio Cogno Spotlight

The Wines of Elvio Cogno

It is Valter Fissore, Elvio Cogno’s son in law, who now runs this fabulous estate alongside Elvio's daughter Nadia. Having recently bought 2 more hectares the estate now totals 13, although they also manage some Barberesco vines which are officially owned by friends of theirs. They are based in Novello in the Langhe area of Piedmont and have been pushing this village into the spotlight with their excellent wines. They remain an astonishing value for the quality, and certainly offer a very high standard in each and every wine they produce.

Elvio Cogno 2016 Nascetta Wine

2016 Anas-Cetta, Nascetta di Novello

Nascetta is a native Piedmont variety, used almost exclusively in blends for years, until recently when a handful of producers have started pushing it into the spotlight on its own. This example, from from Elvio Cogno, is gorgeously textured, with racy minerality balanced by ripe quince fruit, waxy lemon, and a slight hint of salinity, wet stone and white flowers. Drink as an aperitif with antipasti.

2015 Elvio Cogno Langhe Nebbiolo Montegrilli

2015 Langhe Nebbiolo Montegrilli

This blend used to be half Nebbiolo and half Barbera, but has been 100% Nebbiolo since the 2012 vintage. Unoaked, this is a pure and brilliant showcase for the fruit, and overdelivers for the price point. Florals like lavendar are mingled with dark fruit flavours like plum and dark cherry.

Elvio Cogno 2016 Dolcetto d'Alba

2016 Dolcetto d'Alba Vigna del Mandorlo

An intense nose of violet and dark fruits, full on the palate but bursting with freshness and elegant tannin. As per estate tradition, this wine is a true pleasure to drink off the bat, but can be held in the cellar for some time as well.

Elvio Cogno 2013 Barbera d'Alba

2013 Barbera D'Alba Bricco dei Merli

A very different wine from the Barbera Pre-Phylloxera, the grapes for this wine come from a vineyard planted high up (520 metres above sea level) in Berri, near La Morra on sandy chalky soil where there is excellent exposure. This is a lovely, dark fruity wine that is rounded off with a hint of spice. A very lush, generous Barbera.

2014 Barbaresco Bordini Elvio Cogno

2014 Barbaresco Bordini

This Barbaresco is from the Neive vineyard, born of a collaboration between Elvio Cogno and the vineyard owner. Made from Lampia, a sub-variety of Nebbiolo, this wine opens beautifully in the glass, with elegant dark fruit and white pepper undertones with a very hint of salinity.

2013 Elvio Cogno Barolo Cascina Nuova

2013 Barolo Cascina Nuova

This is a gorgeously floral wine, and the most easily approachable of the Cogno Barolos. Cascina Nuova is not a single vineyard wine, but Valter Fissore treats it as if it were, blending the best of the vineyards in Novello (where the stunning Ravera cru is located), to make this wine. Round and spicy, this is a wine to sink your teeth into now or will equally hold up well in a cellar for years to come.

2013 Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera

2013 Barolo Ravera

Ravera is arguably the most important cru in Novello, producing excellent, terroir-driven Barolos. The calcareous soil lends itself to wines that are elegant and structured, and which stand up to years in the cellar. The 2013 is layered with spicy tobacco and wild rose on the nose, and dark brambly fruit and coffee and leather on the palate. This is one to keep in your cellar to unlock its full potential.

 Bricco Pernice

2012 Barolo Bricco Pernice

Barolo Bricco Pernice, named after the rock on which courting partridges build their nests, is the very latest wine from Cogno. First envisioned by Elvio and then achieved by Valter, the project was to create a wine from the beautiful vineyard in Novello in the most historical part of the Ravera cru where the exceptional microclimate makes for superb Barolo. Dark, dusty cherry alongside a spicy mineral finish; this is a beautifully textured wine from the very top of the Cogno range.
