Decanter 'Most Exciting Wines of 2018'

We were thrilled to see several of our wines in
Decanter's "Most Exciting Wines of 2018" list in this month's issue. They are three very different wines from very different regions, but all are superb wines and great representations of the producers.  Featured in the list are Le Due Terre, a fairly new addition from our revamp of our Italian portfolio; Cristom Vineyards, an icon in Willamette Valley and one of the earliest Oregon state wineries we brought into the Stannary fold;  and Hickinbotham, outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon from South Australia that has been cleaning up with critics over the last couple years.

Le Due Terre Sacrisassi Rosso

2015 Sacrisassi Rosso
Le Due Terre, Friuli-Venezia, Italy
£145 per 6 in bond

"Big and burly, but with good black cherry fruit, lively cranberry acid, and a savoury mineral streak that ends with a hint of cherry blossom scent. 94 points."
Oz Clarke, Decanter

Flavio and Silvana started making wine at Le Due Terre in 1984 but their reputation is one of a much older estate. Based in Prepotto on the eastern slopes of the Friuli hills -you can see the Slovenian border from their property- they have four hectares of vineyards that surround the estate and farm another hectare in Cividale.

This is a blend of 50-50-Schiopettino and Refosco. An explosive and complex nose – blackberries and violets opens into stony minerality, blueberry compote and white pepper spice. The tannins are solid but silky and there is a vibrant freshness, that comes from the Refosco. This is a complex, structured wine which is a true expression of the incredible terroir that they have. The 2008 we tried recently was superb and still full of life.

 Cristom Mt Jefferson Pinot Noir

2015 Mt Jefferson Cuvée
Cristom Vineyards, Willamette Valley, Oregon

"Vibrant but soft cherry and cranberry fruit with gentle oak spice and savoury, dusty tannins. Modern and quite complex, with some balsamic tones. A unique wine. 94 points."

2016 Mt Jefferson Cuvée
Cristom Vineyards, Willamette Valley, Oregon
£285 per 12 in bond

Cristom is one of the benchmark Willamette Valley vineyards; winemaker Steve Doerner was a pioneer in using whole cluster fermentation in the region, and his time in Burgundy shows in the finesse of his wines. The Mt. Jefferson Cuvée is a blend of fruit from all the estate vineyards and is one of the best value Pinot Noirs you can find in the Willamette Valley. The 2016 vintage had three heat swells and produced low yields of small, concentrated berries, very similar to the acclaimed 2012 and 2008 vintages. Fresh, lively, and approachable, with bright fruit and some intriguing spice notes.

 Hickinbotham Trueman Cabernet Sauvignon

2016 Trueman Cabernet Sauvignon
Hickinbotham, McLaren Vale, Australia
Not Arrived in UK - 2015 Available

"Texbook aromas: blackcurrent with a hint of green pepper. This is a modern and glossy approach to Cab. Fleshy blackcurrants and a firm undertone of cedar. 92 points."

2015 Trueman Cabernet Sauvignon
Hickinbotham, McLaren Vale, Australia
£295 per 6 in bond

Australian wine is a rarity in our portfolio, but Hickinbotham is a jewel that we couldn't pass up when it crossed our paths several years ago. Owned by American-based Jackson Family Wines, they have bought one of the region’s most revered vineyards in the Clarendon area of McLaren Vale, and are producing beautifully balanced, small-production wines. The Trueman Cabernet Sauvignon opens with round dark plum and blackberry, but balances the fruit with a thread of balanced acidity, with a dried herb and earth undertone that brings some lovely complexity to the wine.
