Avellino is located in the southern third of Italy, with Naples as the closest widely-known city, and not too far from Vesuvius and Pompeii. The high winds of summer and the cool nights mean that maturation arrives gently, increasing complexity and maintaining freshness, even in the warm climate of southern Italy. Ciro Picariello and his wife, Rita focus on the local Fiano grape, making several different bottlings of it with their 7 hectares of vineyard.

Ciro Picariello is producing Fiano that makes us reconsider Italian whites; while many have the impression that Italian white wines don't age, this one does, and quite gracefully. These wines are lively when young but continue to evolve with age, and are proving cellar-worthy.

The 2014 Brut Contadino Spumante is a beautiful sparkling wine, made in the méthode champenoise, which is only one of the reasons that set it apart from ubiquitous prosecco. The nose is floral and lightly toasty, and mineral on the palate, with the intense texture of the Fiano grape. Hints of citrusy clementine and honeycomb round it out; drink this as an aperitif or with a seafood risotto.
