We are delighted to host a tasting with Alice Chidaine, from François Chidaine next Wednesday, 10 June at 7 pm.
It promises to be a fascinating tasting. Located in Montlouis, the estate is among France’s top wine-wine producers. Alice is the third generation at the estate and has worked with Dagueneau, Clos Rougeard and South African Chenin specialist Chris Alheit, before joining her father at the family domaine. She will explain the virtues of Chenin Blanc and talk us through some of the single-vineyard wines that they make in Montlouis.
The Chidaines have been pioneers of biodynamic viticulture in the region and focus on single-vineyard wines. Yields are ultra-low, and they have many old vines and vinification in the cellar is very traditional. Many have argued that Francois Chidaine has achieved for Chenin Blanc what Didier Dagueneau achieved with Sauvignon: wines of exceptional texture and complexity.
Montlouis is located on the opposite side of the river from Vouvray in the Loire. The wines are exclusively made with Chenin Blanc, and like Vouvray, a range of styles are made depending on the conditions of the vintage. Like Vouvray, the subsoil of Tuffeau is key to the region, and many of the cellars are carved into the cliff walls, but the soil in Montlouis has a little more sand and pebbles giving slightly leaner wines, which many consider a bonus for the crisper Sec styles. In fact, the true distinction between Vouvray and Montlouis, is that the most famous examples of Vouvray are usually sweet while Montlouis prides itself on producing fully dry Chenin Blancs.
