Join us at 7.00pm on Wednesday 20th May for a virtual tasting with winemaker Gavin Chanin of Chanin Wines.
Gavin Chanin never set out to become a winemaker, instead he went to UCLA to study art. A summer job at Au Bon Climat changed his life. He soon skipped autumn term at UCLA to enable him to make wine first at Au Bon Climat and later also at Qupe. Then in 2007 he did a vintage at Hamilton Russell in South Africa and two New Zealand wineries as well as in California and launched his own label with some fruit from Los Alamos and grapes that Jim Clendenen (Au Bon Climat) had given him. His breakthrough came when he managed to convince the owners of Bien Nacido to sell him some fruit. His whirlwind career continued and he was featured in Forbes ’30 under 30’ and sees his wines distributed around the world. Chanin’s style is distinctive and focuses on elegance and restrain with moderate alcohol levels. There is great ripeness on his Pinot, yet he harvests five weeks before many of his fellow winemakers and there is a distinctive long length. His Chardonnay is barrel fermented and in youth, it is taut, almost closed in the first year or two yet slowly unfurls to something beautiful.
